Google has launched version 20 of its Google Ads API, marking a major update with new features and improvements. Developers are required to upgrade client libraries and code to utilize the latest functionalities. This release follows a consistent update schedule, with two more major releases expected in 2025.
Important Enhancements and Additions
- Demand Gen Campaign Reporting: New values for
ad_network_type
segment enable channel-specific segmentation for Demand Gen campaigns including MAPS, GMAIL, and DISCOVER. - Campaign-level Negative Keywords: Support added for adding and updating negative keywords at the campaign level for Performance Max campaigns.
- Cross-account Conversion Tracking: Conversion tracking now allows updating the
google_ads_conversion_customer
field for cross-account management. - Privacy Compliance: Introduction of
ClickConversion.user_ip_address
field with conditional logic to exclude IP addresses from users in the EEA, UK, and Switzerland to comply with privacy laws. - Recommendations API: Addition of
merchant_id
field to tailor recommendations for retail campaigns. - Audience and Content Creator Insights: Enhanced segmentation by device, geographic targeting, and detailed video engagement metrics—available to allowlisted accounts only.
- Reach Planning Improvements: New endpoints for retrieving first-party user lists and generating reach forecasts using audience data, enhancing campaign planning for allowlisted users.
- Video Ads Reporting: Added reporting for
AdFormatType.PAUSE
ads shown on organic YouTube videos on TV screens.
Additional Notes and API Lifecycle
The AdWords API was sunset on April 27, 2024, and will cease functioning by the end of July 2024. Developers are strongly advised to migrate to the Google Ads API to benefit from new features and ongoing support.
For developers and advertisers, upgrading to version 20 is essential to leverage enhanced reporting, targeting, and conversion tracking capabilities.
