TL;DR Summary of Google’s New Controls for Search Generative AI Features

Google has introduced new controls allowing site owners to manage how their content is used in Search generative AI features such as AI Mode and AI Overviews. These settings let sites choose to include or exclude their content from AI-powered search results, affecting impressions and traffic. The controls support inheritance from parent properties but can be overridden independently. Currently, this feature is available only for UK sites and took effect on June 17, 2026.

Understanding Google’s New AI Content Usage Controls

Google has rolled out a detailed help document explaining how website owners can control the use of their content in Google’s generative AI search features. This update applies to functionalities like AI Mode, AI Overviews, and generative AI in Google Discover. The controls became effective on June 17, 2026, currently limited to websites based in the UK.

Available Control Options for Site Owners

  • Include my site’s links and content: Allows your content to appear and be linked within AI-powered search results, potentially increasing site impressions and traffic. This setting is the default for all properties.
  • Exclude my site’s links and content: Prevents your site’s content from appearing or being referenced in AI search features, stopping any traffic or impressions generated through these means.
  • Inherit control from parent: If your property is part of a hierarchy, it inherits the AI content usage setting from its parent property unless manually overridden.

Important Details on Property Inheritance and Implementation

The inheritance mechanism ensures that child properties follow the AI content usage settings configured at the parent level, unless explicitly changed. If no parent has set a control, the property inherits settings from the top-level domain property. Google notes that exclusions will propagate within 1-2 days, though some delays may occur due to caching across systems. Importantly, these controls do not affect standard search ranking or inclusion beyond the AI features.

Implications for Website Owners

Site owners should review the new help documentation thoroughly, even if they do not plan immediate changes. Understanding these controls can help manage how AI-driven search features interact with your content, safeguarding your site’s visibility and traffic as Google’s search technology evolves.
