Optimixed Overview

Optimixed's original report on this story.

SERoundtable reports that Google is testing query refinement bubbles at the top of AI Overviews in Google Search. Clicking a bubble does not change the query; it takes users into AI Mode for that query set.

How we got here

Earlier, on August 28, Google was testing an AI Overview experience that automatically expands into full AI Mode responses. On September 14, Google tested query expansion and refinement features in AI Mode beyond follow-ups. Then, on September 22, Google was embedding links within AI Overviews that route users to AI Mode rather than external web pages. Now, Google is testing query refinement bubbles above AI Overviews, and clicking one opens AI Mode for that query set instead of changing the query.
